Separating Your Original Work From Later Changes
Why this matters
When you are diagnosing a system you installed and someone has since worked on, the first practical skill is telling your work apart from theirs at the component level. This is not about ego. It is diagnostics: the boundary between "mine" and "added later" is usually the boundary between "known good" and "unknown," and the fault often lives right on that seam. Read the seam and you cut your diagnosis time in half.
Materials never lie
Every shop and every era has a material signature. The parts you buy, the way you route, and the standard you hold leave a fingerprint that a later hand rarely matches exactly.
- Mixed materials at a junction are the clearest tell: a different pipe or fitting material spliced into a run, a wire of a different gauge or insulation color landing on your terminal, a coupling brand that is not the one you stock.
- Age mismatch is nearly as reliable. Aged material has uniform patina, dust, and oxidation. A newer part in an old system stands out clean, or shows fresh cut marks, bright threads, or unweathered jacket where everything around it has dulled.
- A transition fitting where none belongs (an adapter, a union, a splice box) often marks the exact point where someone tied their change into your original run.
Workmanship signature
Beyond the parts, how the work was done carries authorship. You know your own habits; look for where they break.
- Routing and support: the spacing of your straps, clamps, or hangers, your bend radius, your service loops. A section run tighter, looser, or messier than your standard was probably not you.
- Connection method: the way you make up joints, terminate conductors, or seal fittings. A soldered joint next to your crimped ones, a wire nut where you always use a lug, a different sealant color, a hose clamp where you used a proper fitting.
- Labeling and finish: your marker, your tape, your tag style. A label in a different hand or a missing label on one device in an otherwise consistent set points to a later touch.
Name the tell out loud as you find it. "This branch is mine, this tie-in is not" is a diagnostic statement, not a complaint.
The three-pile sort
Do not try to hold the whole picture in your head. Sort every relevant component into one of three piles.

The unclear pile is where honesty matters most. Guessing it into "mine" makes you own a fault you did not create; guessing it into "theirs" makes you dodge one you did. Leave it unassigned until the evidence decides.
When the change is hidden
Not every modification is visible at the panel or the fixture. Someone may have changed a setting, swapped an internal part, or altered something buried in a wall or underground.
- Compare the current configuration against the original design intent, not just the visible hardware. A control set outside your commissioning values, a jumper added inside an enclosure, or a part number that does not match the equipment is a hidden change. - Where you cannot see, use the numbers. A pressure, flow, or current reading that cannot be explained by your original design usually means something upstream or downstream was altered where you cannot lay eyes on it.
Document the boundary before you touch it
Photograph the seam between your work and the later change before you disturb anything, the same way you photograph corrosion before you clean it. Once you cut into it, you cannot re-read who did what. The photo backs your finding whether it clears your original work or confirms a fault in it.
The judgment to bank: find the boundary first, because the boundary is usually the diagnosis.
