Smart Home Protocols - Z-Wave, Zigbee, Matter Reference
Why this reference exists
Customers ask "will this smart switch work with my Alexa / Google / Apple home?" + most installers say "yes" or "no" by guessing. The protocols (Z-Wave, Zigbee, Matter, Wi-Fi, Thread) interact in specific ways. A smart-home install that pieces together compatible devices commands + builds long-lasting customer relationships. Knowing the protocols matters for sales credibility.
The protocols
Wi-Fi (802.11):
- Direct to home router, no hub needed
- Highest data bandwidth (cameras, streaming)
- Highest power draw (no good for battery devices)
- Most network slots used; congests home Wi-Fi
- Devices: Ring cameras, Nest thermostat, ecobee, most kitchen + bath smart fixtures
- Range: dependent on Wi-Fi network
- Power: only for AC-powered devices
Z-Wave:
- 908.42 MHz (sub-GHz; less congested than 2.4 GHz)
- Requires hub (SmartThings, Hubitat, Home Assistant + Z-Wave stick)
- Mesh network (devices repeat for each other)
- Low power (good for battery sensors)
- Up to ~232 devices per network
- Devices: Ring + ADT sensors, Honeywell, Inovelli switches, Kwikset locks, Aeotec sensors
- Range: 100+ ft outdoor, less indoor
- Power: AC or battery
Zigbee (802.15.4):
- 2.4 GHz (same band as Wi-Fi)
- Requires hub (SmartThings, Hubitat, Echo Plus, Hue Bridge, IKEA gateway)
- Mesh network
- Low power
- Up to 65,000+ devices theoretical
- Devices: Philips Hue lights, IKEA Tradfri, Sonoff, Aqara sensors, smart plugs
- Range: 30-100 ft indoor
- Power: AC or battery
Thread (802.15.4 with IP):
- 2.4 GHz, mesh, IPv6-based
- No central hub required; routers (border + endpoints) self-organize
- Used by: Eve, Nanoleaf, Apple HomePod, Google Nest Wi-Fi, Amazon Echo (4th gen+)
- Future-forward; works with Matter
Matter (formerly Project CHIP):
- Application-layer standard over Wi-Fi, Thread, + Bluetooth
- 2022+ commercial release; rapid adoption 2024-2025
- Cross-platform: works with Alexa, Google, Apple, Samsung
- Customer perception: "the universal smart home standard"
- Hub-less or hub-mediated
- 2025: most major manufacturers shipping Matter-compatible devices
The Matter promise
Matter eliminates the ecosystem-lock-in problem. A Matter-rated smart switch from any brand works on Alexa + Google + Apple + SmartThings simultaneously. Customer doesn't need to choose ecosystem at purchase time. Future-proof.
Matter is built on existing protocols (Wi-Fi or Thread mostly), so the underlying tech is similar. Matter is the LANGUAGE on top.
For 2025 installs: prefer Matter-compatible devices when available. They're future-flexible.
Which protocol for which scenario
Smart plugs + switches:
- Z-Wave: cheap + reliable; requires hub
- Wi-Fi: cheapest; congests network
- Matter (Wi-Fi or Thread): future-proof
Lighting:
- Hue or LIFX (Wi-Fi or Zigbee): ecosystem-locked but reliable

- AC + bandwidth-heavy → Wi-Fi
