Smell by Location: Indoor Odor Source Decision Tree
Why this matters
"There's a smell" is one of the vaguest calls you take and one of the most diagnostic once you work it right. A smell is a sensor: it tells you what is happening and roughly where, if you read it by character and location instead of guessing. Some smells are a hazard that ends the diagnosis and starts an evacuation; most are a tractable source you can trace. This tree teaches you to triage the smell for danger first, then narrow it by what it smells like and where it is strongest.
Start here: is the smell a hazard
Before you trace anything, screen for the smells that mean stop and act, not investigate:
- Rotten eggs, sulfur, or skunk - treat as a gas leak. Get people out, touch nothing electrical, do not use a phone inside, and call the gas utility and 911 from outside. Do not "follow it to the source."
- Hot, acrid, electrical, or melting-plastic - treat as an overheating circuit. De-energize the affected circuit before you put hands near it; if there is smoke or flame, treat it as a fire.
- Vehicle-exhaust or a vague "stuffy headache" smell with occupants feeling ill - suspect carbon monoxide. Get everyone to fresh air and treat it as an emergency; CO itself is odorless, so the symptoms matter more than the smell.
If none of these, proceed to trace. If in doubt, escalate to the hazard path.
Narrow by character: what does it smell like
Smell character points at a category. Match it, then go find where it is strongest.
- Musty, earthy, "old basement" - moisture and microbial growth. Think standing water, a slow leak, trapped humidity, a wet building material.
- Sewer, rotten, "drain" - a plumbing trap that dried out and lost its water seal, or a venting or waste issue. The water seal in a trap is what blocks sewer gas; an unused fixture's trap evaporates and the smell comes up.
- Sweet, chemical, or solvent-like - a refrigerant, a coolant, or a stored chemical; ventilate and identify before assuming.
- Burnt-dust, "first time the heat came on" - dust burning off a heating element; usually benign and fades, but confirm it is dust and not insulation or wiring.
- Sour, rotting, organic - spoiled food, a dead pest in a wall or duct, or organic matter in a drain.
Narrow by location: where is it strongest
Walk the building and find the peak. The source is almost always where the smell is strongest and where a plausible mechanism exists.
- Does it track a fixture or appliance? Strongest at a sink, drain, or appliance points you straight at it.
- Does it track the air system? If it is everywhere and worse when air is moving, the source is in the airflow path - a return, a duct, a coil, a filter. Something in the air handler spreads its smell to every room.
- Does it track a room or a wall? Localized to one area suggests a contained source: a leak behind that wall, a wet floor, a pest, stored material.
- Does it come and go with use? A smell that appears only when water runs, when heat runs, or when a fixture is used tells you which system to inspect.

A dry trap is the classic easy win: a floor drain or unused fixture loses its water seal, sewer gas rises, and simply running water to refill the trap can end the call.
Confirm before you conclude
A smell diagnosis is not done until you have a mechanism, not just a hunch:
- Reproduce it if you can - run the fixture, the heat, the air - and confirm the smell follows.
- Find the physical cause you can point to: the water, the dry trap, the wet material, the failed component.
- Re-screen for hazard if anything you find suggests gas, combustion, or an electrical fault, and switch to the hazard path immediately.
Bank this: read the smell for danger first, then by character and location. The nose narrows it; a found mechanism closes it.
