The DIY Repair That Created the Fault: Decision Tree

Why this matters

You open it up and find someone has already been in here. A wrong part, a jumpered wire, a bypassed safety, mismatched fittings, a "fix" that became the fault. DIY and prior-handyman work is one of the trickiest calls in the trade, because the customer is often the one who did it, the work may be unsafe, and you have to fix the real problem without insulting the person paying you. There is also a real liability question: once you touch it, parts of it become yours. This tree keeps you safe, honest, and out of trouble.

Start here: assume it might be unsafe and verify before you trust anything

A DIY repair can hide a hazard that a factory installation never would. Before you do anything else: do not energize or pressurize on the assumption it is wired or plumbed correctly. Verify it is safe first - check for defeated safeties, wrong supply, reversed connections, missing grounds, or makeshift fittings, and de-energize or shut off if anything is questionable. Treat unknown prior work as guilty until proven safe. A bypassed safety device or a wrong supply can hurt you the instant you power it up.

First: assess what was done

Survey the prior work before you decide your move. Look for:

  • Defeated safeties - a jumpered protector, a removed limit, a bypassed interlock. This is the most dangerous category and changes everything.
  • Wrong parts or supply - a component that does not match the spec, a supply of the wrong type or rating, fittings that do not belong together.
  • Bad workmanship - back-stabbed or twisted connections, no proper joints, reversed polarity, leaks waiting to happen.
  • The actual fault - sometimes the DIY work created the problem directly; sometimes it is incidental and the real fault is elsewhere. Find out which.

Photograph what you find before you change anything. If a dispute or a warranty question arises later, the as-found condition is your record.

The liability principle: what you touch becomes yours

This is the rule that protects you: once you repair or sign off on a system, you have taken on responsibility for the parts you worked on. That means:

  • You cannot leave a known hazard in place and walk away because "the customer did that part." If you saw a defeated safety, you own knowing about it.
  • You should not patch around bad prior work in a way that leaves the underlying problem live. If the DIY work is the disease, treat the disease.
  • You may need to decline to put a system back in service that you cannot make safe, and say so in writing.

Touching it makes it yours. Decide what you are willing to own before you start turning wrenches.

Quote the real scope

DIY-caused faults often hide a bigger job than the customer expects, because the "fix" they did is layered on top of the original problem. When you quote:

  • Price the real repair, not a band-aid over the prior work. If the right fix means undoing what they did, say so and price it.
  • Be clear about what you will and will not warranty. You cannot stand behind a system where someone else's work is still in the path. Define what you are responsible for.
  • Separate the must-do-now safety items from the should-do-soon quality items, so the customer can see the difference between dangerous and merely wrong.

Handle the conversation without insult

The customer who did the work is often standing right there. Keep their dignity and your honesty both intact:

  • Credit the effort, correct the outcome. "I can see what you were going for here" before "but this part is what is causing the failure."
  • Attribute to the work, not the worker. "This connection is the fault" lands better than "you did this wrong."
  • Lead with safety where it applies. "This one I have to fix before I can let it run, it is a shock risk" is a fact about the equipment, not a judgment of them.
  • Make the path forward the main topic. One sentence on what went wrong, the rest on how to make it right and safe.

The judgment to bank: treat unknown prior work as unsafe until you prove otherwise, fix the root rather than patching around it, and remember that whatever you touch becomes yours to stand behind. Be generous with the person and firm about the work.
