The Fault That Appeared After a Renovation, Decision Tree

Why this matters

"It worked fine before the remodel" is one of the most common openers in a service call, and it is almost always true and almost never the whole story. A renovation changes load, access, airflow, drainage slope, or wiring paths in ways the people living there never see. Chase the wrong cause here and you either waste a visit blaming old equipment for a new problem, or you miss that the renovation itself created a real hazard that needs fixing before you touch anything else.

Start here: what actually changed

Before diagnosing the fault itself, get a plain answer to what the renovation touched. Ask, and if possible look:

  • What rooms or systems were opened up (walls, ceiling, floor, attic, crawlspace)?
  • Was anything added that draws power, water, or airflow (an appliance, a fixture, an added room, a finished basement)?
  • Was anything removed, rerouted, or covered over (a vent, a cleanout, a junction box, an access panel)?
  • When did the fault start relative to the work: during, right after completion, or weeks later?

A fault that starts during or immediately after the work points hard at something the renovation crew touched, moved, or covered. A fault that starts weeks or months later can still be renovation-caused (a slow leak behind new drywall, a load that only shows up under seasonal demand) but deserves a wider net.

If the fault involves electrical

Safety first: if you find exposed, damaged, or improperly buried wiring, de-energize the circuit at the breaker before doing anything else. Do not assume a wire behind new drywall is dead just because the room "isn't finished yet."

  1. Check whether the renovation added load (new outlets, a new appliance circuit, additional lighting) to a panel or circuit that was not sized for it.
  2. Check whether a junction box, splice, or connection got buried behind new finish material without an accessible cover. Code requires accessible junctions; a covered one is both a violation and a common source of intermittent faults from a loosened connection nobody can inspect.
  3. Check whether a wire was nicked, pierced by a fastener, or pinched during framing or drywall work. This can cause an immediate fault or a slow-developing one as insulation degrades at the damage point.

If the fault involves plumbing or drainage

  1. Check for a change in drain slope or a new offset introduced when a wall or floor was altered. A drain that ran fine before can now trap water or slow flow if its path changed even slightly.
  2. Check whether a vent was capped, rerouted, or left disconnected. A blocked or removed vent shows up as slow drains, gurgling, or trap siphoning throughout the connected system, not just at the new work.
  3. Check whether new fixtures were added to a branch line without confirming it had the capacity, which can starve flow or pressure to existing fixtures on the same branch.

If the fault involves heating, cooling, or airflow

  1. Check whether the renovation closed off a return path, added a room without extending supply and return, or changed the conditioned square footage without anyone reviewing whether the existing equipment can still cover it (see the related article on retrofit load changes).
  2. Check for a duct that was crushed, disconnected, or rerouted through a tight new space during framing.
  3. Check whether insulation or vapor barrier work changed how the space breathes, which can shift humidity and condensation patterns even when the equipment itself is unchanged.

If nothing points to the renovation

Not every post-renovation complaint is renovation-caused. Equipment that was already near end of life can fail around the same time purely by coincidence, especially if the renovation added stress (dust, vibration, temporary power interruptions) that simply hastened an existing problem. Confirm with a normal diagnostic path on the equipment itself before defaulting to "the renovation did it." State plainly to the customer which one it is, because the responsible party for repair costs often differs between the two.

Close the loop

  1. Fix the immediate fault.
  2. If the root cause is a code or capacity issue the renovation introduced, document it clearly and separately from the fault itself, since it may need to go back to the renovation contractor.
  3. Note what was covered, moved, or added so the next tech who opens a ticket on this address has the history.
