The Fault That Only Shows in Heat, Cold, Humidity, or Storm
Why this matters
When a customer tells you the trouble only happens in the heat, or only when it is freezing, or only when it rains, they have handed you the single most useful filter in diagnostics: the condition narrows the suspect list before you touch a tool. The problem is that these faults test clean the rest of the time, so a tech who does not know which failures each condition tends to expose walks in blind and leaves without a diagnosis. This is a field catalog. Match the reported condition to its column, and you know where to look and what to reproduce.
Heat: what hides until it is hot
Heat pushes systems toward their capacity ceiling, expands metal, and thins lubricants and dielectrics. Faults that only surface on the hottest hours tend to be about being at the limit.
- Electrical: a marginal or loose connection that opens as metal expands; a breaker at the edge of its rating that trips only when ambient heat lowers its threshold; insulation that leaks only when hot.
- HVAC and refrigeration: a compressor or motor that stalls or overloads only at peak head pressure; a start component that fades in a hot enclosure; a charge that is fine until the coil cannot reject heat on a design day.
- Appliance: a control board or relay that misbehaves once its cabinet heat-soaks; a thermal switch nuisance-tripping.
- Pool and pump: a pump losing prime or a motor cutting out on thermal overload during the longest, hottest run of the day.
Cold: what hides until it is cold
Cold contracts metal, thickens fluids, freezes water, and weakens anything already marginal at starting.
- Plumbing: a line or a hidden low spot that only fails when it freezes; a pressure-relief or backflow component that weeps only after a freeze-thaw cycle.
- HVAC: a heat pump or start component that struggles only below a certain outdoor temperature; a condensate path that ices and backs up; a gas valve or ignitor slow to light on the coldest morning.
- Electrical: a connection that opens on contraction rather than expansion, the mirror of the heat case.
- Appliance and pool: thickened lubricant or a stiff seal that leaks or drags until the equipment warms; outdoor equipment that will not start cold but runs fine once going.
Humidity and damp: what hides until the air is wet
Moisture puts a conductive or corrosive film where there was none, and it often lags the weather by hours, so the failure shows the muggy morning after.
- Electrical: a cracked insulator, a corroded terminal, or a hairline gap that conducts or shorts only while damp, then dries and reads clean; nuisance ground-fault trips in wet conditions.
- HVAC: condensation inside a control or panel; a drain that only overflows at high indoor humidity; a coil that sweats onto something it should not.
- Appliance: a moisture-sensitive sensor or contact that misreads in a humid space.
- Pool and equipment pads: corrosion-driven intermittents at outdoor connections that come and go with the dew point.
Storm, wind, and heavy rain: what hides until the weather turns
Wind-driven rain finds paths steady rain never reaches, and a passing front swings pressure, draft, and water tables. Safety first here: any time water and electricity meet - a flooded pad, a wet panel, a submerged fixture - de-energize the circuit and verify it is dead before you go near it, and treat any gas appliance that is spilling or backdrafting as an evacuate-and-ventilate situation before you diagnose anything.
- Building envelope and plumbing: a leak that only appears with wind from one direction; a drain or sump overwhelmed only by storm-rate water; a sewer or vent that gurgles when a pressure front moves through.
- Electrical: intrusion at an outdoor enclosure or a service entrance that only conducts during blowing rain; surge-related damage clustered around lightning activity.
- HVAC and venting: a draft or venting fault that reverses when wind loads the vent; debris-driven airflow blockage after a blow.
- Pool and outdoor systems: a bonding or GFCI issue exposed by standing water; equipment flooded only at storm-rate runoff.
Using the catalog
Take the condition the customer named and read down its column for the fault families that fit the symptom. That gives you a short, condition-specific suspect list instead of the whole system. Then do not stop at the list: confirm it by reproducing the condition where it is safe to do so, or by leaving a logger and returning on the next event, because a clean reading between events proves only that the condition is absent, not that the fault is. The condition points; the capture convicts.
