The Hazard Is in Another Trade's Scope: Decision Tree
Why this matters
You went out for a plugged drain and found scorched insulation on the panel feeding the disposal. You went out for a no-cool call and found a gas connector weeping at the meter. The hazard is real, but it is not your trade and maybe not your license. Walking away silent is the worst option; pretending the repair is yours to make is the second worst. This tree keeps you out of both mistakes: handle the danger, stay inside your competence, and hand off clean.
Start here: is anyone in immediate danger
Before you sort out whose trade it is, sort out whether it can hurt someone in the next few minutes. Trade scope is a licensing question. Immediate danger is a life question, and it wins.
Act now, whatever your trade, if you find:
- A gas or fuel smell, or a hissing connector - get people out, touch nothing electrical, call the gas utility from outside. (See the gas-smell response tree.)
- A live exposed conductor, arcing, or a panel that is hot, buzzing, or smoking - keep everyone back, kill power at the main only if you can reach it safely, and call it in.
- Water running onto or into electrical equipment - do not touch either; de-energize the circuit from a dry, safe point if you can, and stand clear.
- Structural sag, a fuel-fed fire, or a carbon-monoxide alarm sounding - evacuate and call 911.
If any of these are present, the safety action comes first and the scope conversation comes after the area is safe. You do not need a license in another trade to pull people back from a hazard.
If it is not seconds from harm: how far can you go
Most cross-trade hazards are slower: a corroded gas line, an overloaded panel, a cracked flue, a missing bonding jumper, a pool bonding grid that reads open. Now the question is competence and license.
If making it safe is inside your trade, even when the full repair is not - do the making-safe part. A plumber can close a shutoff. An HVAC tech can pull a disconnect. A pool tech can lock out a pump. Any tech can take an appliance or circuit out of service. Making a hazard safe is almost always within reach; completing the other trade's repair usually is not.
If the fix needs a license or skill you do not hold - stop at the boundary. Diagnose up to the edge of what you can verify, then say so plainly: "I can see the flue is separated, that is a combustion-safety problem, and it needs a licensed heating contractor. I will not guess past what I can confirm." A clean boundary reads as more professional than a shaky repair outside your lane, not less.
Match the hazard to the right professional
Refer to the trade that owns the fix, not just "an electrician" in the abstract.

When the hazard is utility-side, the customer's own contractor cannot legally touch it. Send them to the utility and tell them why, or the referral bounces back to you.
Do not fix it just because you can reach it
The trap is competence creep: you own the tool, the part is cheap, and the customer is standing there asking you to "just take care of it." If it sits outside your license, a well-meaning fix becomes your liability the moment it fails. You inherited a hazard you did not create. Do not adopt the repair too. Make it safe, document it, refer it.
