Weather Affecting the Repair: Proceed Decision Tree
Why this matters
Weather does not just make a job uncomfortable, it changes whether the job is safe and whether the repair will even hold. Lightning makes rooftops and ladders deadly. Cold makes sealants and tests lie. Heat puts you on the ground before the customer's equipment ever fails. A repair done in the wrong conditions can pass on site and fail the next day, or hurt you before you finish. This tree sorts weather into "stop now," "adapt and proceed," and "fine," with the immediate dangers forced to the top.
Start here: is the weather an immediate danger
Some conditions are a stop, full stop. If any of these is present, you do not proceed - you get to safety and wait or reschedule:
- Lightning anywhere nearby. No ladder, no roof, no exposed metal, no exterior electrical work. The standard is conservative: if you can hear thunder, you are within strike range. Wait the recommended interval after the last thunder before going back up.
- High wind that makes ladders, lifts, or roof footing unsafe, or that can turn loose material into a projectile.
- Ice or snow on a walking or climbing surface you must use. A roof or ladder you cannot get solid footing on is not a worksite.
- Flooding or rising water around anything you would energize or stand in.
- Heat or cold severe enough to incapacitate you before the task is done.
These override schedule, customer pressure, and "I'm almost finished." Nothing gets fixed if you fall or get struck.
If safe to be there: will the weather corrupt the repair
You can be safe and still be unable to do the work correctly. Some repairs depend on conditions to cure, seal, or test accurately.
Walk these:
- Does anything need to cure or set? Adhesives, sealants, and coatings have temperature and moisture windows. Apply them outside the window and the bond fails later even though it looked fine when you left.
- Will the test be honest in this weather? A system you are diagnosing for a heat or cold complaint may not reproduce the fault in the opposite condition. A pressure or leak test can read differently across a big temperature swing. Know whether your reading reflects the equipment or the weather.
- Can you keep water and debris out of an opened panel, board, or connection while you work? Working an electrical enclosure in driving rain invites a fault you just created.
- Will the surface or material cooperate? Materials get brittle in cold and soft in heat; fasteners and seals behave differently at the extremes.

When a safety row and a quality row both apply, safety decides. A repair that can wait should wait rather than be done unsafely or done in conditions that guarantee a callback.
If you adapt and proceed
- Shelter the work - a canopy, a vehicle, a temporary enclosure to keep rain and wind off open equipment.
- Note weather-distorted readings on the ticket so the next visit knows the test was conditional.
- Do the safe, durable interim when the permanent fix needs better conditions: a temporary seal, a bypass, a "we will return to complete when it warms up" plan that is itself safe.
If you stop
- Make the site safe before you leave. Do not leave equipment opened, energized, or hazardous because the weather chased you off.
- Tell the customer why - that proceeding now would be unsafe or would not hold - and set the return.
- Document the condition and the reason you deferred.
Bank this: weather is a real input to the job, not an annoyance to push through. Lightning and footing are non-negotiable stops; cure and test windows decide whether the repair will actually last.
