Kinetico Twin-Tank Softener Resin Replacement

Why this matters

Kinetico twin-tank softeners (Premier Series 2030, 2040, 2060, and the legacy Mach 2030s) are non-electric, demand-regenerated units that move water through a turbine-driven control valve. The resin in a Kinetico tank lasts 8-15 years depending on inlet water quality, chlorine load, and whether the customer has been running it past breakthrough. When efficiency degrades - longer regen times, salt usage climbing, soft-water capacity dropping - it is almost always exhausted or fouled resin, not the valve. This guide covers the resin-replacement procedure for a Premier Series twin-tank unit. The procedure is similar across the Mach series, but the tank-to-valve adapter and the resin volume differ by model.

Identify the model and resin volume

Read the data plate on the side of the cabinet:

  • Premier 2030c (compact) - 0.6 cubic ft per tank, 12,500 grains.
  • Premier 2040c - 0.75 cubic ft per tank, 16,000 grains.
  • Premier 2060c - 1.0 cubic ft per tank, 21,000 grains.
  • Premier 2060s (signature) - 1.0 cubic ft per tank, demand-metered.
  • Mach 2030s (legacy) - 0.6 cubic ft per tank.

Each Kinetico tank takes the listed cubic feet of resin PLUS pre-loaded gravel underbedding at the tank bottom. Replacement resin: Purolite C100E or equivalent 8% cross-link cation exchange resin (NSF/ANSI 61 listed). Gravel: 1/4 inch by 1/16 inch quartz gravel, approximately 2 lb per tank for a Premier 2060c.

A 2-cubic-ft total order (1 cubic ft per tank, 2 tanks) is the typical residential parts list.

Tools and parts to stage

  • Replacement resin (cubic feet matched to model)
  • Tank gravel (if the original gravel is contaminated)
  • Kinetico tank wrench (P/N 7290 for Premier) - or a strap wrench wrapped to avoid scoring the tank shoulder
  • 2 inch funnel with extended nozzle
  • Shop vac with a clean filter for resin removal
  • New tank O-rings (P/N 7035 for Premier) - never reuse
  • Food-grade silicone grease (Dow 111 or equivalent)
  • Hydrogen peroxide 3% for tank sanitization
  • Clean garden hose for tank rinse

Bypass and depressurize

Kinetico bypass is the lever on the back of the cabinet - turn it to BYPASS. Open a downstream tap and let pressure bleed off, then close the tap. Open the brine tank lid and confirm the salt level - if low, top up with solar salt before continuing (the system will need brine for the post-rebuild regen).

Disconnect the inlet and outlet plumbing from the valve manifold if your tank shoulder will not clear the cabinet with plumbing connected. Most Premier installs have enough slack on the SharkBite or compression fittings to swing the cabinet free without disconnecting.

Remove the control valve from the tank

The Kinetico control valve is a clamshell assembly that threads onto the top of the resin tank. Unique to Kinetico: the valve mounts via a 2 inch NPT thread to the tank shoulder, NOT the 2.5 inch flat-thread used by Fleck or Clack.

  1. Mark the position of the valve relative to the tank with a wax pencil so you re-orient correctly.
  2. With the tank wrench, break the valve free counterclockwise. The first 1/4 turn is the hardest; expect to lean into it.
  3. Once free, lift the valve straight up. The riser tube (the long 1 inch internal tube that runs to the bottom of the tank) stays in the tank.

Pump out and remove old resin

Lift the riser tube straight up and out of the tank. Set it aside on a clean tarp. Use the shop vac to suction out the old resin into a 5-gallon bucket. Premier tanks hold about 1 cubic ft of resin (40 lb wet weight); expect 2-3 buckets per tank.

Continue suctioning until you reach the gravel underbedding (visible as larger, harder particles). Inspect the gravel:

  • Clean white quartz with normal grading: leave it in place.
  • Brown / black staining: iron foul or organic foul, replace.
  • Cemented mass: replace.

If you keep the original gravel, set the tank aside and move to the second tank for the same procedure.

Inspect and clean the tank interior

With resin and gravel out, look down the tank with a flashlight:

  • Tank wall should be clean and white. Scale or iron staining can be flushed with a 3% hydrogen peroxide soak (1 gallon, 20 minutes, then rinse).
  • Bottom screen / distributor: most Premier tanks use a polypropylene basket distributor at the bottom. Inspect for cracks; replace if any visible damage.
  • Riser tube: check the top screen for fouling. Brush clean.

Load new gravel and resin

  1. If replacing gravel, pour 2 lb of clean 1/4 by 1/16 quartz gravel into the tank, evenly spread across the bottom distributor.
  2. Drop the riser tube straight down through the tank center, seating in the bottom distributor cup.
  3. Tape the top of the riser tube to prevent resin from entering during the resin load.
  4. With the 2 inch funnel positioned over the tank shoulder, slowly pour resin around the riser tube. Pour from a 5-gallon bucket, not directly from a 1 cubic ft bag - control is critical. Resin should reach 80-85% of tank height when fully loaded. Do not overfill - resin needs freeboard for the backwash expansion.

Reinstall the valve

  1. Untape the riser tube top.
  2. Lubricate the new tank O-ring with food-grade silicone grease (do not use petroleum grease).
  3. Set the O-ring on the valve's tank-side seal groove.
  4. Position the valve over the tank, aligning the riser tube with the valve's center port.
  5. Thread the valve onto the tank by hand, then snug with the tank wrench. Do not over-torque - the polyethylene threads strip; a quarter turn past hand-tight is correct.
  6. Confirm the valve is oriented in the same direction as your wax-pencil mark.

Repeat for the second tank.

Sanitize, charge, and return to service

  1. Turn the bypass to a slow-fill position (mid-way between bypass and service if the unit allows; otherwise full service).
  2. Slowly pressurize the tanks. Listen for air-purge through the drain - this can run 5-10 minutes.
  3. Once tanks are full and pressurized, do a manual regen on each tank. On Premier 2060s, use the manual regen lever; on a 2060c, force a regen by drawing 200 gallons of hot water (the demand meter triggers).
  4. Confirm brine draw from the brine tank - drop in brine level on each regen.
  5. After both tanks have regenerated, test soft water at a downstream tap: hardness should be under 1 gpg.

Document the rebuild

  • Resin source / batch number.
  • Date installed.
  • Inlet hardness measured.
  • Outlet hardness post-regen.
  • Bypass returned to service position.
  • Customer instructed on salt refill (Kinetico Premier units carry a recommended brine level - mark inside the brine tank).

The factory resin warranty is typically 10 years, prorated, on resin installed by an authorized Kinetico dealer. Aftermarket resin (Purolite, ResinTech) carries the resin manufacturer's warranty only - not the Kinetico warranty.
