House Pressure Loss Only During Softener Regen Decision Tree

Why this matters

A house that loses pressure for 30 to 90 minutes overnight only during the softener regen cycle is showing a classic configuration problem - the softener is in series with the loop and has no hard-water bypass, OR the control valve is undersized for the household, OR the regen is being mistimed to a fixture-use window. None of these are component failures. The decision tree below isolates the configuration question, the sizing question, and the timing question so the fix avoids a needless service-valve rebuild and the customer's morning shower stays at full pressure.

Symptom presentation

Customer reports pressure dropping to a trickle for an hour, often between 2 AM and 4 AM, then returning to normal. Sometimes the dishwasher or evening washer cycle gets caught in it. The softener is functioning - hardness tests in spec, salt usage normal - but the regen blocks all household flow during the cycle.

Quick checks

  1. Read the regen schedule. Standard delay-clock regens happen at 2 AM by default. A household with shower use at 2 AM (shift workers, infants) will see the symptom every cycle.
  2. Confirm whether the softener has a hard-water-during-regen bypass valve. Some control valves (Fleck 7000, Clack WS1.5) include this; some installs (Fleck 5600, basic Clack WS1) do not. Without it, the entire household goes to no-flow during regen brine draw and rinse.
  3. Check the service flow rate at the softener nameplate against the household peak demand. A small 1.0 inch valve on a high-demand household drops pressure even during normal flow; during the rinse cycle the bottleneck is severe.
  4. Test inlet pressure during regen. A municipal supply that drops from 60 psi to 25 psi during the regen confirms the valve internals are restricting; a supply that stays at 60 psi and the house tap shows 10 psi confirms a downstream blockage caused by the regen.
  5. Inspect for a closed gate valve or partially closed shutoff between softener and main.

Isolation tree

Step 1: Identify the control valve. Look up the manufacturer (Fleck, Clack, Pentair) and read the model. Confirm whether that model has hard-water bypass-during-regen as a feature. If yes, the feature should be active; if no, the customer needs either a valve upgrade or a different remediation.

Step 2: Read the regen schedule and shift the time to 3 AM, 4 AM, or another window matched to the household's lowest-use hour. This often resolves the customer complaint without any hardware change. If the schedule is already at the lowest-use hour and complaints persist, advance.

Step 3: Measure household demand. Run two showers, a dishwasher, and a clothes washer simultaneously and measure flow at the kitchen tap and at the laundry tap during the test. Compare against softener service rating. A softener rated 8 gpm service flow with the household demanding 12 gpm at simultaneous fixtures has a chronic restriction; the regen makes it acute.

Step 4: If the control valve has a hard-water-during-regen feature but it is not engaging, audit the valve programming. Some Clack and Fleck units require enabling the option in the menu. A factory default may have it off.

Step 5: If the valve is undersized for household demand, upsize. Move from a 1.0 inch valve to a 1.25 inch or to a Fleck 9100 twin tank that has no-downtime regen.

Confirming diagnosis

Schedule conflict confirms when shifting regen to a confirmed low-use hour eliminates the customer complaint. Missing hard-water-bypass confirms when no such valve exists and the customer was sold on its presence. Sizing fault confirms when household peak demand exceeds the valve's service rating and pressure drop is measured across the valve at peak. Twin-tank requirement confirms when the household demands 24-hour soft water and cannot accept any regen-cycle interruption.

Remediation

For schedule conflict: change the time of day setting on the control valve to a confirmed lowest-use window.

For missing hard-water-bypass: install a Watts or Wilkins bypass plumbing assembly with check valves so the house draws raw hard water during the regen cycle. Document with the customer that they will have hard water at the tap for the duration of the regen on this configuration.

For sizing fault: upsize the valve and the tank to match household peak demand. For a twin-tank install (Fleck 9100 or Kinetico Twin), the second tank serves while the first regenerates - the household never sees a regen-cycle interruption.

For programming fault: enable the bypass-during-regen feature in the valve menu.

After any change, observe one full regen cycle from the customer's tap and verify pressure delivered during the cycle. Document the regen start time, the household demand profile, and the new configuration on the work order.
