OSHA 10 vs OSHA 30 Training

Why this matters

OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 are the two most-common workplace safety credentials in the construction and skilled trades. Some jurisdictions mandate them (Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York City require OSHA 10 for construction workers; Nevada and Missouri require OSHA 30 for supervisors). Many commercial customers require them as a condition of being on their property. Many GC contracts require all sub-contractor workers to be OSHA 10 certified. A contractor whose technicians don't have these credentials cannot bid on most commercial work and is increasingly excluded from residential work in some markets. The training is straightforward and the cost is modest; getting it done is mostly a matter of scheduling.

What OSHA 10 covers

The OSHA 10-Hour Construction Safety course is the most-common entry-level safety credential. Content:

What OSHA 30 covers

The OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety course is the more-comprehensive credential, typically required for supervisors and high-risk workers. Content:

    • Cranes, rigging, hoists
    • Scaffold safety

Verification

Verify the trainer is OSHA Outreach Training Program authorized:

  • OSHA maintains a public list of authorized trainers
  • The training provider should display the trainer's authorization
  • Wallet cards are issued by the trainer following submission to OSHA

Beware:

  • Courses claiming "OSHA approved" or "OSHA certified" - the language matters; "OSHA Outreach Training Program" is the official program
  • Excessively cheap courses (per the application) may be diploma mills
  • Courses without an authorized trainer don't produce a valid card

Recordkeeping

Maintain employee training records:

  • Date of training
  • Course (OSHA 10 or 30)
  • Trainer / training provider
  • Card number
  • Date of expiration (if applicable)

Annual refresher

OSHA 10/30 do not have a formal expiration date. However:

A weekly safety meeting (15 minutes covering a topic) is the standard alternative to formal annual refresher.

Specific topics in service trades

For most service trades, the highest-leverage OSHA topics:

  1. Fall protection: working above 6 ft in residential, 4 ft in commercial; harnesses, anchors, training
  2. Electrocution prevention: lock-out tag-out, GFCI use, proper PPE
  3. Lifting and ergonomics: backs and shoulders are the highest-claim injuries
  4. Vehicle safety: driving to and from sites; loading and unloading
  5. PPE: appropriate to the task; head, eye, foot, hearing, respiratory
