The Pre-Task Hazard Scan
Why this matters
The minute before you start a task is the cheapest place to prevent an injury. A pre-task hazard scan is a short, deliberate look at the work in front of you, before your tools come out. It is not paperwork and it is not a meeting. It is a sixty-second habit that catches the thing you were about to walk into. Done right, it becomes automatic, like checking your mirrors before you change lanes.
Step 1: Stop before the first tool comes out
The scan only works if you do it before momentum takes over. Once your hands are moving and you are focused on the repair, you stop seeing the room. So the rule is simple: park the toolbag, stand where you can see the whole work area, and take a breath. If you have already started cutting, drilling, or lifting, you are too late for this pass.
Step 2: Name the task in one sentence
Say what you are about to do. "I am pulling this water heater and setting a new one." Naming it forces your brain to think about the specific hazards of that specific job instead of a generic glance. A panel swap, a roof flashing repair, and a drain auger each carry different dangers. The task drives the scan.
Step 3: Run the four-question sweep
Ask these in order. They cover the large majority of field hazards.
- What can fall, on me or from me? Overhead lines, loose material, the thing I am lifting, me off a ladder or edge.
- What is energized? Electrical, gas, water under pressure, refrigerant, a spring or capacitor holding stored energy.
- What is underfoot? Slip, trip, uneven ground, an opening, ice, a cord I am about to lay.
- Who else is in the blast radius? Homeowner, kids, pets, a coworker, traffic, anyone who could walk into my work.
If any answer is yes, you have a hazard to handle before you proceed.
Step 4: Decide a control for each hazard you found
A hazard you noticed but did not act on is worse than not looking, because now you have given yourself permission. Use the simplest control that actually works, in this order of preference:
- Eliminate it. De-energize and lock out. Move the obstacle. Clear the people.
- Guard against it. Cone off the area, set up fall protection, put down a mat, close a door so the dog stays out.
- Wear for it. Glasses, gloves, hearing protection sized to the specific task, not your default kit.
PPE is the last line, not the first. If the only thing standing between you and an injury is your safety glasses, the control is weak.
Step 5: Plan your exit and your help
Two quick questions that get skipped. How do I get out fast if this goes wrong, and is my path clear right now? And if I get hurt in a confined or remote spot, does anyone know where I am? On a solo call, a one-line text to the office before you go into a crawlspace or onto a roof is a real control.
Step 6: Re-scan when the job changes
The scan is not one and done. Run a quick version again any time conditions shift: a new room, the weather turns, a part fights you and you decide to "just force it," a second tech arrives. Each change can introduce a hazard the first scan never saw. The discipline is re-looking, not assuming the first look still holds.
Make it a reflex, not a ritual
Five tasks in a row with no hazard found does not mean the scan is wasted. It means the scan is working and you are building the habit. The day it pays off is the day you are tired, behind, and about to grab a line you assumed was dead. The reflex you built on the easy jobs is what stops you on the hard one.
