The Unfamiliar Jobsite Hazard Walk

Why this matters

The job you have done a thousand times is safe because you know the building. A site you have never set foot in is a stack of unknowns: a panel that is not where panels usually are, a dog you did not know about, a stair with a rotten tread, a gas line buried where nobody marked it. The two minutes you spend walking the site before you start work is the cheapest insurance you will ever buy. Most field injuries happen in the first hour, on ground the tech did not size up.

Step 1: Walk it before you unload

Do not back the truck up to the door and start hauling. Park, get out, and walk the path you will actually use, from the truck to the work area and back. You are looking for what will trip you, fall on you, or surprise you while your hands are full and your eyes are on a heavy item.

Notice surfaces: ice, wet leaves, loose gravel, a sloped driveway, soft soil, a deck that flexes. Notice overhead: low eaves, power lines near where a ladder goes, branches. This first lap takes about ninety seconds and it sets your whole plan.

Step 2: Find the shutoffs before you need them

On any site with electrical, water, or gas, locate the means of cutting it off before you start. You do not want to be hunting for the main while water is spraying or a wire is arcing.

  • Electrical: where is the panel, and does the main breaker actually move?
  • Water: where is the main shutoff or the meter, and do you have what you need to operate it?
  • Gas: where is the meter and the shutoff, and which way is off?

If you cannot find a shutoff, that is a finding. Tell the customer and adjust the plan before any work starts.

Step 3: Read the people and animals

A jobsite is not just structure. Ask the customer three things at the door:

  • Are there pets, and can they be put away while you work?
  • Is anyone home who should not be in the work area, like small kids?
  • Is there anything about the property you should know? People will tell you about the wasp nest, the bad step, or the breaker that trips if you ask.

A surprised dog and a surprised tech on a ladder are a bad combination. Handle it at hello.

Step 4: Size up the specific work zone

Now look hard at where the actual work happens. This is where trade hazards live: the crawlspace with no clearance, the attic with no decking, the roof pitch you misjudged from the ground, the mechanical room stacked floor to ceiling with stored junk.

  • Is there room to work and to back out fast if something goes wrong?
  • What is above you and below you?
  • Is the air okay? Confined or sealed spaces can hold bad air; if a space feels stuffy, smells off, or has been closed up, treat the atmosphere as a hazard, not a hunch.
  • Is there a second way out, or are you working yourself into a corner?

Step 5: Match your protection to what you found

The walk tells you what to wear and what to set up before you commit. Put it on now, not after the close call.

  • Eyes for anything that cuts, grinds, sprays, or sends chips flying.
  • Hearing for anything loud and sustained.
  • A respirator or at minimum a good dust mask for dust, mold, spray, or bad air.
  • Fall protection for height, and a properly footed ladder on stable ground.
  • Gloves matched to the hazard (cut, chemical, electrical), not just whatever is in the door pocket.

Step 6: Name the top hazard out loud

Before the first tool runs, say the single biggest risk on this site out loud, to yourself or the crew. "The ground is icy and I am carrying weight." "That panel is live and crowded." Naming it keeps it in front of your mind for the next hour, which is exactly when it would otherwise bite you.

If anything in the walk genuinely scares you and cannot be made safe, you are allowed to stop and call your lead. A delayed job is recoverable. A bad fall is not.
