Working Alone: Staying Safe When No One Is Watching

Why this matters

Most field techs spend the day alone. You drive solo, you crawl into the attic solo, you work a basement panel with nobody within shouting distance. The job that hurts you alone is the same job that would be a non-event with a second person standing there. The risk is not that the work is harder by yourself. It is that when something goes wrong, the clock starts and nobody knows.

The real hazard is the gap, not the task

A fall, a shock, a heat collapse, a bad reaction in a confined space - none of those are uniquely dangerous because you are alone. What changes is the response time. A coworker calls for help in seconds. Alone, you might lie at the bottom of a crawlspace for hours before the office wonders why you went quiet.

So the whole game of lone-worker safety is closing that gap. Two questions answer it:

  • If I go down right now, how long until someone notices?
  • When they notice, can they find me?

If the honest answer to the first is "end of day," you have a problem to fix before you ever touch a tool.

Set a check-in rhythm and actually keep it

The single most effective lone-worker control costs nothing: a check-in schedule. The office (or a buddy) expects to hear from you on a set cadence, and if they do not, they escalate.

Practical patterns that work for small shops:

  • Job-bracket check-in. Text "on site" when you arrive and "clear" when you leave. A missed "clear" after the expected window triggers a call.
  • Interval check-in for long or risky jobs. On an all-day attic or a remote site, agree on a two-hour ping. Silence past the window means someone calls, then drives out.
  • High-risk pre-notice. Before anything with real consequence (energized work, a roof, a confined space), tell a specific person what you are about to do and when you will report back.

The rule that makes this real: define what happens when you miss. A check-in nobody enforces is theater. Decide in advance who calls, how long they wait, and when they physically come looking.

Make yourself findable

Help that cannot reach you is not help. Build findability in before you start:

  • Share your real location, not just the customer name. A dropped pin beats "the Henderson job" when a dispatcher is reading it to a 911 operator.
  • Keep your phone on you, charged, and reachable - not in the van while you are on the roof. A dead phone in your pocket is the most common reason a check-in system fails.
  • Tell the customer where you are working. The homeowner who knows you went into the crawlspace is your closest responder if you stop answering.
  • For gated, rural, or hard-access sites, note the approach. "Locked gate, code on the call ticket, shop is the building on the left" can save critical minutes.

Know which jobs you should not do alone at all

Some work is not a check-in problem. It is a stop-and-wait problem. There are tasks where the correct lone-worker answer is "not by yourself, period":

  • Confined-space entry. A space that is hard to get out of and can hold bad air is a two-person minimum by long-standing safety practice: one person works, one stays outside as an attendant. Going in alone is how people die in tanks, vaults, and tight crawlspaces.
  • Live electrical work above the most routine level. If a shock could put you on the ground, a solo arrangement means nobody is there to kill the power and start CPR.
  • Heavy lift or rigging where a slip pins you. If the load can trap you, you need a second set of hands or a mechanical aid, not heroics.

When you hit one of these, the professional move is to reschedule for a two-person crew or call for backup. That is not weakness. That is the part of the job that separates a tech who retires healthy from one who does not.

Build the habit, not just the policy

A lone-worker plan lives or dies on whether the crew treats it as normal. A few things that make it stick:

  • Owners and leads go first. If the boss skips check-ins, everyone learns they are optional.
  • No punishment for the call that turns out fine. If someone escalates because you went quiet and you were just in a dead zone, that is the system working. Thank them. Never make them feel dumb for it.
  • Review the near-misses. The day a check-in actually caught someone (or would have) is the day to talk about it openly, so the next person trusts the system.

You will work alone for most of your career. The techs who make it to the end of it are not the ones who never had a bad moment on a job. They are the ones who set it up so a bad moment alone never became a fatal one.
